About the Artist

GJ Gillespie
GJ Gillespie is an accomplished mixed media collage artist living on Whidbey Island, Washington. With over 200 publications in literary and art journals, 23 awards, and 70+ exhibitions, Gillespie has established himself as one of the region's most celebrated contemporary artists. His work draws inspiration from Northwest Mystics and mid-century abstract expressionists, particularly Arshile Gorky, Kenneth Callahan, and Mark Tobey.

Gillespie is a Professor Emeritus of Communication from Northwest University, where he taught for 32 years. He is also the founder of Leda Art Supply, an international sketchbook company, and serves as Director of The Creativity Initiative, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on art education and supply accessibility.

His artistic process transforms everyday materials—newspaper clippings, tissue paper, Fred Meyer grocery ads, crossword puzzles—into what he calls "future antiques." Drawing from art history, Gillespie creates layered compositions that evoke what he describes as "unconscious feelings of longing for existential meaning that emerge from cultural icons."

𝐄𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋 𝐉𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐍𝐄𝐘𝐒: 𝐍𝐎𝐖 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐖𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐀𝐓 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐏𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐄 𝐋𝐈𝐁𝐑𝐀𝐑𝐘
Thrilled to see this morning's Whidbey News-Times feature on my current exhibition "Ethereal Journeys: Abstract Figures and Dreamscapes" at Coupeville Public Library!
The show features 15 mixed media collages spanning 2015-2025, including several brand-new works created specifically for this exhibition. Each piece transforms everyday materials—newspaper clippings, tissue paper, Fred Meyer grocery ads—into what I call "future antiques."
Drawing from my 1928 Tudor Revival farmhouse studio in Oak Harbor, these pieces channel the spirit of the Northwest Mystics—artists like Morris Graves and Mark Tobey—while exploring themes of transcendent beauty and existential meaning through cultural iconography.
As the newspaper notes, my approach involves "transforming everyday materials into ethereal compositions where figures dissolve into dreamscapes." With 23 awards, 70+ exhibitions, and 200+ publications across the US, Canada, and Europe, this homecoming exhibition on Whidbey Island holds special meaning.
