AWARD #23: BEST OF THE NET NOMINATION

I'm honored to share that my artwork "Can't Help Myself" has been nominated for Best of the Net 2026 by MEMEZINE!

Can't Help Myself by GJ Gillespie.

Best of the Net is an annual anthology published by Sundress Publications that celebrates the finest poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and art published online each year. Literary magazine editors can nominate only a very limited number of pieces from their entire year of publications, making this selection particularly meaningful.

MEMEZINE chose "Can't Help Myself" as one of their nominations from everything they published between July 2024 and June 2025. The piece originally appeared in their May 2025 issue.

Best of the Net judges will now review all nominations to select finalists for inclusion in the 2026 anthology. Regardless of the final outcome, being nominated is a significant recognition in the online literary community.

This marks my 23rd literary award and recognition.

GJ Gillespie Art Solo Show
Crazy Diamond #1 by GJ Gillespie.

June - September 2026 | Burien, Washington

I'm thrilled to announce my participation in the 2026 City of Burien Gallery Program with a four-month solo exhibition at Merrill Gardens in Burien, Washington. This significant exhibition will span June through September 2026 and feature approximately 40 works across nine storefront windows.

ANCIENT MYTHS MEET MODERN MATERIALS

This exhibition brings together seven years of artistic exploration—from Greek and Roman mythology to Gorky-inspired abstractions, from Pacific Northwest landscapes to Egyptian pharaohs.

Working with my signature mixed-media collage technique, I transform everyday materials (crossword puzzles, grocery ads, colored tissue, found papers) into layered narratives that bridge ancient stories and contemporary life.

The show includes more than 20 pieces previously published in literary journals, multiple award-winning works, and my recent Best of the Net 2026 nomination for "Can't Help Myself."

Exhibition Details:

  • Venue: Merrill Gardens, Burien, WA
  • Dates: June - September 2026
  • Program: City of Burien Gallery Program

More information about the exhibition, including an opening reception and viewing hours, will be announced closer to the June 2026 installation date. MORE

"Only a Memory" by GJ Gillespie.
Mixed media collage on board.
24 x 12". 2025.
The editors of this distinguished literary magazine, affiliated with the Johns Hopkins Center for Medical Humanities and Social Medicine, have chosen "Only a Memory" by GJ Gillespie for publication in their "Care" issue, available electronically and in print in February 2026.

Built with found papers, tissue, acrylic paint, and grocery ads, the piece explores themes of presence and absence, memory and loss. The translucent quality of the figures suggests the ephemeral nature of recollection itself.

About GJ Gillespie

"The artists that I admire tap feelings of awe that permit the viewer to experience new perspectives of being."
-- GJ Gillespie

Living in a 1928 farmhouse overlooking Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island (north of Seattle) is an inspiring setting for an artist. The abstract expressionist masters who produced haunting images from this region are constant inspirations.

Sketching at the Getty Malibu in Los Angeles
Most of my designs are inspired by art history.

The artists I admire tap unconscious feelings of longing for existential meaning that emerge from cultural icons. In my view, abstraction should be more than pleasing design. Instead, art should evoke connotations that permit the viewer to experience a sense of wonder, awe and new perspectives of being.

I enjoy experimenting with various media such as watercolor, collage, encaustic and mixed media on paper, canvas and board. I find that the translucent effect of layering watercolor adds depth and metaphorical meaning.

Following an atemporal style, I sometimes copy the works of old master painters, giving my own take by making them into collages.
