I Think They Call This Love by GJ Gillespie.

I THINK THEY CALL THIS LOVE

Mixed media collage on canvas. 24 x 24 x 1.5. 2026. [price].
Title after the 2024 song by Elliot James Reay.

About the work
Orbs float on an abstract field of vertical columns. I made the columns from torn found papers and spray paint, and the colors move and interact in a pattern. The geometry owes something to Binning and to mid-century abstract art generally. It also looks a little like Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrors, where dots multiply until the room disappears.

The circle is one of the oldest symbols in art. It stands for the sun, the whole, the eye, the cycle that never ends. I use found papers to reach for what I have called universal archetypes, images that mean something before anyone explains them. A circle is about as universal as they get.

The title is a love song, and a love song is the most universal thing a songwriter can write. Love may be the meaning of life, or it may be where human creative aspiration ends. I left that open.
