Modern Myth Making
Where Ancient Stories Meet Found Materials
June–September 2026
Modern Myth Making is a solo exhibition by GJ Gillespie, presented as part of the City of Burien Gallery Program at Merrill Gardens, June–September 2026.
58 works are installed across nine storefront windows in three series — Ancient Echoes, Midcentury Rifts, and Mystic Landscapes. Working in mixed-media collage, Gillespie layers grocery ads, crossword puzzles, tissue, found paper, and paint to reimagine Greek and Roman mythology, mid-century abstraction, and the fog-bound landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. Titles drawn from rock and pop music connect ancient imagery to modern soundtracks, producing work that feels simultaneously familiar and strange.
ABOUT the Artists
| GJ Gillespie Artist |
GJ Gillespie (b. 1955) is a mixed-media collage artist living and working in a 1928 Tudor Revival farmhouse on Whidbey Island, Washington. Inspired by the Northwest Mystics and mid-century abstract expressionism, his layered collages transform found materials — grocery advertisements, tissue, newsprint, and paint — into figurative and abstract works that explore cultural iconography. His work has appeared in 213 publications, received 19 awards, and been exhibited in 77 shows.
Gillespie owns Leda Art Supply — a premium sketchbook company — and is founder of The Creativity Initiative, a (501(c)(3), educational art charity. Learn more at creativityinitiative.org.
