"INTO THE MYSTIC" SOLD
An Oak Harbor, WA  couple saw my collage "Into the Mystic" while touring my art studio and decided to purchase it. Glad to have another GJ Gillespie collector and that the painting has found a loving home.
The collector ask me to say more about the art piece.

"Into the Mystic" by GJ Gillespie SOLD
DESCRIPTION
"Into the Mystic" by GJ Gillespie. Mixed media collage on canvas. 30 x 40 x .15. 2024. Found papers, tissue, cloth, pencil, ink, watercolor, oil and acrylic paint. Title after 1969 rock song by Northern Irish singer and songwriter Van Morrison.

STATEMENT
Into the Mystic' is a contemporary reinterpretation of one of William Turner's naval battle scenes, created using my distinctive collage approach. Turner, a renowned 19th-century British painter, was celebrated for his atmospheric depictions of light and color in landscapes and seascapes.

In this piece, I aimed to capture Turner's essence while infusing it with my own artistic vision. Using a mix of found papers, tissue, cloth, and various paints, I built layers that echo Turner's color palette and values. However, my approach diverges by introducing abstract expressionist elements, adding lines, sails, and masts in a way that creates ambiguity and depth.

The process involved carefully selecting and manipulating materials to achieve a balance between recognizable forms and abstract elements. By incorporating unexpected materials like grocery ads and crossword puzzles, I inject a contemporary commentary on consumerism and information overload into the historical context.

This work is not just a representation of a naval scene, but a meditation on art history itself. It invites the viewer to explore the tension between classical maritime painting and modern abstraction, challenging perceptions and evoking a sense of the mystic – much like the Van Morrison song that inspired its title.

My abstract collage "Desperado" was selected for the Ekphrastic Art Challenge presented by the esteemed Rattle Literary Magazine.

This special monthly challenge pairs visual art with poetry - the image I submitted will serve as inspiration for poems by Rattle's creative community.

Two winning poets (chosen by myself and Rattle's editor) will have their writings published online next to "Desperado".

As the artist, I'll help pick which poem or poems I feel best resonate with and enhance the essence of my artwork.

SOLUM LITERARY PRESS
To publish my collage "Man Who Fell to Earth" in an upcoming issue.
November 8, 2023 The editor asked me to write an Artist Statement about the piece:
Man Who Fell to Earth by GJ Gillespie

My collage “Man Who Fell to Earth” depicts a cryptic figure seemingly falling through a fragmented space. Stark black outlines and ink splatters create a visceral composition filled with movement and uncertainty. Alternative titles like “The Fall of Man” came to mind, as the piece evokes an allegorical descent, the unraveling of order into chaos. Yet any discernible meaning remains ambiguous.
I often use collage to explore existential themes abstractly, distilling ephemeral emotions into an enigmatic visual form. As an artist, I seek to tap into the unconscious realm of symbols, dreams, and memories. My goal is to create images that resonate on a deeper level, conjuring a sense of mystery that allows viewers to superimpose their own interpretations and past experiences.
Many of my works reference art history, combining cut-up visual fragments as a metaphor for the fluidity of meaning over time. I incorporate varied materials like colored tissue, newspaper clippings, and grocery ads as a nod to pop art's use of the everyday. But I seek to imbue these mundane elements with a haunting psychological weight.
While abstraction may conceal definitive narratives, it can uncover truths through pure sensation that resonate on a deeper human level. My aim is to create work that lingers in the mind like fading memories or dreams, moving the viewer in inexplicable ways. If my art can provide glimpses into that ineffable realm beyond words, I have accomplished my goal as an artist. -- GJ GILLESPIE, artist

About GJ Gillespie

"The artists that I admire tap feelings of awe that permit the viewer to experience new perspectives of being."
-- GJ Gillespie

Living in a 1928 farmhouse overlooking Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island (north of Seattle) is an inspiring setting for an artist. The abstract expressionist masters who produced haunting images from this region are constant inspirations.

Sketching at the Getty Malibu in Los Angeles
Most of my designs are inspired by art history.

The artists I admire tap unconscious feelings of longing for existential meaning that emerge from cultural icons. In my view, abstraction should be more than pleasing design. Instead, art should evoke connotations that permit the viewer to experience a sense of wonder, awe and new perspectives of being.

I enjoy experimenting with various media such as watercolor, collage, encaustic and mixed media on paper, canvas and board. I find that the translucent effect of layering watercolor adds depth and metaphorical meaning.

IDEAS for an abstract piece might appear in a dream. Inspiration also come by studying the works of the masters. Alfonso Ossorio, Arshile Gorky, Hans Hoffman and Lee Krasner influence me.

Following an atemporal style, I sometimes copy the works of old master painters, giving my own take by making them into collages.
